Supporting Local Traders: A Path to Economic Independence

A Path to Economic Independence

Meeting with Kampala's trading leaders allowed us to explain the NRM's fifth point: building a self-sustaining, independent economy. This idea has been central to our efforts since the 1960s student movement.

Our goal is to support local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports, especially in textiles. The focus isn't on importing but on shifting to local production and adding value.

I encouraged the traders to unite as one group. This way, we can better support them. I also suggested they collaborate more among themselves before meeting with the larger group.
