It is with profound sadness that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, on this 15th day of October 2025, received the heartbreaking news of the passing of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, the former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya.
Rt. Hon. Odinga was not merely a politician — he was a steadfast freedom fighter and a true son of Africa, following in the footsteps of his late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President. Both father and son stood firm for justice, freedom, and the unity of Africa.
President Museveni recalled that, ideologically, the Odingas embodied a patriotic and Pan-Africanist spirit. He had the privilege of exchanging ideas with both men on numerous occasions, sharing a common vision for the unity and integration of Kenya, East Africa, and the entire African continent. Rt. Hon. Odinga was a consistent advocate for the realization of the East African Federation — a dream deeply rooted in the principles of Pan-Africanism and regional solidarity.
President Museveni expressed deep regret that Africa has lost such a towering statesman at a crucial time in its history. He emphasized the importance of young Africans stepping forward to continue the noble struggle for unity, development, and self-determination — values that Rt. Hon. Odinga passionately championed throughout his life.
On behalf of the Government and People of Uganda, President Museveni extended heartfelt condolences to H.E. President William Ruto, the Government and People of Kenya, and to the family of Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Signed,
Yoweri Kaguta Museveni
President of the Republic of Uganda and Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM)
