President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni addressed celebrations marking World Tourism Day at Mbale S.S. Grounds, where he encouraged Ugandans to embrace the four sectors of wealth creation and take advantage of the economic opportunities available within the tourism industry.
The President highlighted Uganda’s diverse tourism attractions, including the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, wildlife, natural landscapes and favourable climate. He noted that these resources give the country significant potential to attract international and domestic visitors and generate more income from tourism.
President Museveni described tourism as an important global industry and called for Uganda to position itself to benefit more from the sector by protecting its attractions, improving infrastructure and increasing economic participation among local communities.
He also emphasised the connection between tourism, agriculture, electricity generation and environmental conservation. The President warned against the destruction of wetlands and other natural resources, noting that environmental degradation threatens water sources, agriculture, tourism and the country’s long-term development.
President Museveni further called for the extension of last-mile infrastructure to areas such as Bududa and Manjiya. He said improved infrastructure would enhance accessibility, connect communities and support tourism and other economic activities.
The President also acknowledged the efforts of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the Ministry of Tourism in promoting and developing Uganda’s tourism sector, while encouraging them to continue strengthening their work across the country.
