Today, President Museveni held a meeting with leaders from the Lango sub-region to deliberate on the long-standing issue of cattle compensation.
During the discussion, I highlighted three key points:
-
Root Causes of Property Loss – The widespread loss of property stemmed from poor governance in the past, particularly the politics of identity, which fueled many of the wars that Uganda endured.
-
Consultation on Compensation Approach – I sought the leaders’ perspectives on the most effective way to structure the compensation program.
-
Step-by-Step Implementation – I stressed that it would be misleading to suggest that all claims can be addressed at once, underscoring the importance of handling compensation in a phased and sustainable manner.
In conclusion, we agreed that the leaders would nominate a smaller representative team of about 20 individuals. This group will work closely with me to discuss details and chart a practical way forward for the cattle compensation program.
