Leaders and stakeholders from different parts of the country met at the Office of the National Chairman (ONC-Kyambogo) to discuss issues affecting the fisheries sector with Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo.

Mr. Kambugu Godfrey Sseyonga, Chairman of the Association of Fisheries and Lake Users Uganda (AFALU), led the discussions. He highlighted that many lake users support President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni but face significant challenges in their industry.

They expressed concerns about the army's illegal operations on the lakes, resulting in injuries, wounds, and financial losses for fishermen. Kambugu emphasized the need for the army's presence to enforce fishing regulations but called for better facilitation to prevent harassment and corruption.

Kambugu also mentioned that during the 2021 elections, the army's actions stifled support for President Museveni in fishing communities.

Additionally, they discussed the burden of taxes on the fisheries sector, which often outweighs their earnings. Namyalo acknowledged these challenges, vowing to address them and convey their concerns to President Museveni.

Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo shared her own experience of discovering army misconduct in Mayuge district and pledged to advocate for the fishing communities' interests despite potential risks.

Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo assured the leaders that she would present their proposals to the president and urged them to document their concerns for further action.

Regarding excessive taxation, Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo criticized those providing misleading information to the president, highlighting the disparity between taxes collected and government services provided in some areas.
