ONC made history as thousands of Muslims and well-wishers gathered along Buganda Road for the country’s first-ever Street Iftar.

The event was organized by the Office of the National Chairman NRM (ONC), led by Senior Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, also known as Chief Muzzukulu. It brought together people from different religious, social, and political backgrounds, promoting unity and faith.

By early afternoon, large crowds had gathered along Buganda Road, from Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) to Watoto Church/Senana Supermarket. Volunteers set up tables, prepared food, and ensured everything was in place for the communal meal. As the sun set, the usually busy street turned into a space of prayer, reflection, and togetherness.

Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo played an active role, personally serving fruits, juice, and pilau to attendees as they broke their fast. She expressed her gratitude for the large turnout, emphasizing that the event was about more than just sharing a meal—it was about strengthening faith and promoting generosity.

She thanked President Yoweri Museveni for supporting the Muslim community, highlighting the establishment of Salaam Bank as a sign of his commitment to economic empowerment. She also praised the President for allowing Muslims to hold this historic event in the heart of Kampala, calling it a testament to religious harmony. However, she cautioned that some individuals close to the President do not always advocate for the needs of ordinary Ugandans. She urged the Muslim community to support President Museveni in the upcoming elections, citing his record of development and inclusivity.

Sheikh Erias Kigozi, the Wakiso District Kadhi, described President Museveni as a visionary leader who has safeguarded Muslim property rights and ensured Muslim representation in key government positions. He appreciated the opportunity to hold an Iftar in a public space, calling it a significant milestone for the Muslim community. He also thanked the government for protecting Muslim assets and supporting Salaam Bank, which operates under Sharia law.

Senior Superintendent of Police Abdallah Kitimbo commended the discipline and organization of the event. He encouraged Muslims to carry the values of Ramadan—patience, kindness, and discipline—into their daily lives, beyond the holy month.

The evening was filled with Quran recitations, sermons, and traditional Mataali performances, adding to the spiritual significance of the event. Attendees expressed their appreciation, with many calling the gathering groundbreaking. Even those from opposition-leaning groups acknowledged the positive impact of such initiatives, with some stating that the NRM’s outreach had changed their perception of the government.

Beyond celebrating Ramadan, the event also served as a strong grassroots mobilization effort. With the 2026 elections approaching, the Street Iftar further cemented Hajjat Namyalo’s influence as a key political mobilizer for President Museveni.
