President Museveni Announces New Support Fund for Tea Farmers in Kanungu

President Museveni, while addressing residents of Kanungu at Rwere Playground, announced that the government will establish a dedicated fund to help tea farmers access affordable fertilisers. He noted that growers—especially those managing large estates—have faced rising production costs. To ease this burden, the government will support farmers through their SACCOs, similar to the planned assistance for sugarcane growers and fishing communities.

He emphasised that tea remains the economic backbone of Kanungu, and encouraged farmers with smaller landholdings to embrace the four-acre model as a proven pathway out of poverty.

President Museveni also reminded the people of Kanungu that peace is the first of the seven core contributions of the NRM. He highlighted that communities near the Congo border understand the value of peace more than most. Uganda has achieved and maintained peace without relying on external forces by prioritising strong and strategic defence systems.

With peace secured, the country has been able to invest heavily in infrastructure. President Museveni reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the road network, including upgrading the 149 km Hamurwa–Kerere–Kanungu–Butogota–Hamayanza–Ifasha–Ikunza road stretch. He assured the people of Kanungu that this road will be worked on to further support regional development and connectivity.
