President Museveni Pledges Government Support for Cultural Institutions and Preservation of Uganda’s Heritage

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged Government support for proposals presented by cultural leaders, emphasising the importance of preserving Uganda’s languages, cultural heritage and traditional knowledge while promoting research and eliminating harmful cultural practices.

The President made the remarks following two days of discussions with cultural leaders, during which they explored ways of strengthening cultural institutions and supporting initiatives aimed at preserving Uganda’s diverse traditions and indigenous knowledge.

President Museveni thanked the cultural leaders for their participation and constructive contributions, assuring them that the Government would support their proposals, particularly those focused on research and cultural preservation.

He encouraged cultural institutions to work closely with existing Government research facilities, including Kawanda, Namulonge and Serere, rather than establishing separate research centres that could duplicate existing services and resources.

He encouraged cultural institutions to work closely with existing Government research facilities, including Kawanda, Namulonge and Serere, rather than establishing separate research centres that could duplicate existing services and resources.

According to the President, collaboration with established research institutions would enable cultural organisations to benefit from available expertise, infrastructure and technical knowledge while making better use of public resources.

President Museveni also emphasised the need to protect Uganda’s indigenous languages, cultural practices and useful traditions, noting that cultural heritage remains an important part of the country's identity and should be passed on to future generations.

However, he cautioned against harmful traditional practices, stressing that cultural preservation must respect individual rights and personal freedoms.

Citing wife inheritance as an example, the President stated that such practices must be based on the free consent of those involved rather than force or coercion.

He encouraged cultural leaders to promote traditions that contribute positively to society while addressing practices that undermine the dignity and rights of individuals.

President Museveni concluded by appreciating the cultural leaders for their engagement and wishing them success in their efforts to preserve and promote Uganda’s cultural heritage.
