President Museveni Meets South Sudan Trade Minister, Calls for Stronger Trade and Regional Cooperation

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni received South Sudan’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Labanya Margaret Mathya Ugila, and her delegation at State House Entebbe for discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral trade, infrastructure development and economic cooperation between Uganda and South Sudan.

The delegation is in Uganda to participate in the Joint Business Forum, which provides an opportunity for the two countries to explore ways of expanding trade, investment and business partnerships.

During the meeting, President Museveni highlighted the existing trade relationship between Uganda and South Sudan, noting that Uganda currently exports goods worth approximately USD 700 million annually to its northern neighbour.

The President emphasised that the two countries have the potential to expand their trade volumes by addressing barriers that affect the movement of goods and improving infrastructure that supports cross-border business activities.

He particularly highlighted the need to strengthen security along the Juba–Nimule road, an important transport route connecting Uganda and South Sudan. Improving security along the corridor would help facilitate the movement of traders, transporters and goods between the two countries.

President Museveni also called for progress on the electricity transmission project between Uganda and South Sudan, noting its importance in strengthening energy cooperation and supporting industrial and economic activities.

The discussions further covered opportunities to remove trade barriers, improve connectivity and create a more favourable environment for businesses operating across the two countries.

Beyond trade and infrastructure, President Museveni and the South Sudanese delegation exchanged views on South Sudan’s forthcoming elections and the importance of maintaining peace and stability.

The President highlighted the significance of continued dialogue and cooperation in addressing regional challenges and supporting economic development.

The meeting underscored the importance of strengthening relations between Uganda and South Sudan through trade, infrastructure development, security cooperation and sustained diplomatic engagement.
