H.E President Yoweri Museveni, who also serves as the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), joined pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond to commemorate Martyrs Day in Namugongo. This annual event honors the memory of the Uganda Martyrs, who were executed by Kabaka Mwanga for refusing to renounce Christianity.

In his address, President Museveni emphasized the significance of the Martyrs' sacrifice, noting that their persecution did not halt the spread of Christianity in Uganda and Africa. He stated, "The blood of the Martyrs watered the seed of Christianity, serving as a catalyst for its growth."

President Museveni drew parallels with early Christian martyrs, such as St. Stephen and St. James, and highlighted that the Uganda Martyrs are part of the Church’s long history of martyrdom. He reiterated that attempts to suppress righteous ideas, particularly those rooted in godliness and humanity, have always failed. "If an idea is correct and progressive, it will eventually triumph," he said.

Museveni also linked the enduring values of Christianity to the NRM’s ideology, which is built on non-sectarianism, patriotism, Pan-Africanism, and fraternity. He criticized Kabaka Mwanga's persecution of Christian converts, urging forgiveness and understanding.

Furthermore, President Museveni called on Christians to balance their spiritual and physical needs, encouraging them to strive for decent and prosperous lives through profitable enterprises in sectors such as agriculture, industry, services, and ICT. He emphasized that a relevant Christian ministry should encourage believers to work towards achieving decent standards of living.

"Jesus Christ should serve as an example to all religious leaders and their followers," Museveni noted, highlighting that besides fasting and prayer, Jesus also addressed physical needs by healing ailments and feeding the hungry.

President Museveni concluded by thanking all attendees for commemorating the Uganda Martyrs and wished them peaceful celebrations.
