ONC (Office of the National Chairman) regional coordinator visited VH Primary School in Lira City West Division after being invited by the Headteacher, Mr. Odur Jacob. The visit aimed to check on the school's progress and understand its urgent needs.
VH Primary School, located in Bazaar Ward, was founded in 1953 by the Indian community and is now run by the Government of Uganda along with the local community. The school is 72 years old and currently has 1,463 pupils (720 boys and 743 girls) in the second term of the 2025 school year.
The school has two groups of teachers: 8 PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) teachers (7 men, 1 woman) and 28 government teachers (21 men, 7 women).
In 2024, VH Primary performed well academically, with 50 pupils scoring Division One in national exams.
However, on July 5, 2024, a fire broke out in one of the dormitories due to a solar battery explosion. The fire destroyed the roof, walls, and students’ belongings. Thankfully, no one was hurt as students were doing midterm exams at the time.
After the fire, the school held a meeting with parents. They agreed to work together to support the affected pupils. The school offered to provide books, mattresses, and boxes, while parents helped with clothing and other personal items.
Headteacher Mr. Odur asked the ONC office for help with cement to plaster the dormitory. He said they already have roofing materials but need funds for labor. He also requested support to renovate other old school buildings that haven’t been repaired since 1953.
The ONC coordinator was joined by Deputy CISO Afande Moses during the school visit.
